SYNOPSIS...A series of lows move eastward over the High Arctic

bringing moderate westerly winds over the pack ice. Winds over the

ice edge will be light and variable. Expect continued slow

degredation of ice under near-freezing air temperatures.

28'W to 71 36'N 145 39'W to 72 3'N 162 14'W to 73 59'N 170 22'W to

67 54'N 172 44'W. The ice edge is open water.



From land-based points in Alaska, the main edge extends from 10 nm

northeast of Oliktok Point to 80 nm north-northeast of Prudhoe Bay

to 100 nm north of Icy Cape to 300 nm north of Cape Lisburne to 130

nm west of Point Hope. The ice edge is open water.





FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast

confidence is high.



Winds in the southern Beaufort will be light and variable through

Saturday. Expect ice to drift with local currents with little net

movement. Warm sea surface temperatures will contribute to continued

melt.

There are patches of very open brash ice lingering off of the

northwest Alaska coastline. Winds will be light and variable until

Saturday when an approaching low brings moderate southwesterly

winds. Warm sea surface termperatures will contribute to continued

melting. Alaska waters will likely be close to ice free by Saturday.
